A Little Rant about Wrestlemania 39

Ok…let me start by stating that I am a long-time fan of pro wrestling in general. I’ve watched pro wrestling, or whatever each promotion calls it for more than 40 years, and I’ve seen my fair share of great and shitty finishes, but the ending of night two’s Wrestlemania 39, for me, is possibly one of the worst endings I’ve ever seen in not just Wrestlemania history, but the pro wrestling history of the last 40 years.

Look, I have a lot of respect for Roman Reigns outside and inside the ring. I have been a fan of his since he debuted with the Shield. He was my favorite member of the Shield, followed closely by Dean Ambrose/Jon Moxley. I was so glad when he was finally getting over, after coming back to wrestling after a real serious illness, and I will always applaud and respect him as a wrestler and as a person.

That being said, whoever made the decision to have him win the main event match of night two’s Wrestlemania 39 to retain the Undisputed WWE Title made the wrong choice. Quite frankly, as a fan of pro wrestling mind you, Roman Reigns the character has had the belt for far too long, and frankly his win tonight makes those belts irrelevant. On his way to being a “dominant” champion (I put dominant in quotations because I don’t consider someone who has only kept his belt through cheap, BS cheating for at least the last five matches dominant), the WWE creators have basically buried the entirety of the Men’s roster. I could name ten wrestlers who are not only technically better than Reigns, but who have the charisma and the fans’ backing, and who would make amazing champions if given the chance on the roster right now, but it seems like Vince and co. (this apparently includes Triple H unfortunately) have decided that instead of passing the torch to these people so they can run with it, they instead tell the WWE Universe, “No! You think you know what you want, but you don’t.” Cody Rhodes, Samy Zhan (who is red hot right now), Seth Rollins, and Walter (I will never call him Gunther) are just a few of the names who could and should have taken the mantle and been able to run with it, but for some reason, Vince and others have decided that since it took them eight years to finally get Roman Reigns cheered by the fans that it means it’s time to bury the rest of the men’s roster so as to keep him on top in the hopes of finally being able to create another Cena, Rock or Austin. From a fan’s perspective, for me, Reigns’ run as champion is just as bad as when Brock Lesnar held the best for two years. The only difference is that at least Reigns has been made to defend the belt, but let’s be honest, if the WWE creators were just going to bury the rest of the men’s division to keep Reigns relevant as a champion, I would have preferred the “only wrestling once every six months are more that Lesnar did when he held the title–at least the rest of the division wouldn’t have had to suffer from it.

As it stands, this year’s Wrestlemania, as a whole, and this match in particular gets a 3 out of five for me because the ending of this match garnered minus two points from me. After the end of this match, I no longer care about the WWE Undisputed Championship, because, as a fan, creative will only find some dumbass way for them to keep Reigns with the belt, and again, as much as I respect Roman Reigns inside and outside the ring, him having the belts make them irrelevant to me, because frankly he’s had them for two long, and his retaining the belts has been quite redundant for the last year and a half. So when and if he shows up tomorrow night at Raw, I will simply either mute out, change the channel, or just completely turn off the show, because I don’t care what he has to say and I don’t care about the belts or that title. It’s wasted TV time to me.

On a side note, I absolutely loved both Women’s title matches. I’m glad Rhea Ripley won, and I’m sad that Asuka didn’t win, because I really wanted her to win the championship. That being said, I really like Belair and I think she’s a good champion, so I’ll just have to hope that Asuka gets another chance to finally grab the title. I thought Seth Rollins vs Logan Paul was a top-notch match, and was definitely a contender for the match of Night One of Mania 39, if it wasn’t for Ripley vs Flair. I loved the main event of night one, and am glad that Zhan and Owens won the belts. The triple-threat match for the Intercontinental Championship was a very good match. Though I am upset that Sheamus didn’t win, Walter is a very solid champion. I will say though that the Intercontinental belt looks like complete garbage. It really NEEDS a change in design. I am of two minds on the Lesnar vs Omos match that opened Night Two of Mania 39. On one hand, I am glad that this was the first match, so that we could get this garbage and completely unnecessary match out of the way. On the other hand, I felt like the “Pee Break” match was way too early in the event. I honestly couldn’t care about this match. Omos can’t wrestle his way out of a paper bag, and frankly though I do have respect for Lesnar’s prowess in the ring, I don’t want to see him wrestle anymore. To be fair, I only cared about a quarter of the matches on the two-night card, and only really cared about the Reigns/Rhodes match, because I wanted to see Rhodes take the belts from Reigns and finally give the belts to the next deserving wrestler.

I know that I may be taking this a little too strongly for some, but Reigns has had the belts far beyond his relevancy to keep them, and that’s how I feel about it. What do yall think? Do you think I may be taking this turn of events a little too rough? Did you like the ending to the main event of night two Wrestlemania 39, and if so, let me know why?
