So, the Drake v. UMG/Kendrick Lamar lawsuit has been dropped by the judge. The thing about it is she saw what everyone else with a brain and the ability to think critically saw from the beginning. I love that she laid out her reasons for dismissing the lawsuit by using Drake’s own words and behavior against him.
I honestly hope that this dismissal can finally end the more than year-long farce of a case can finally help everyone move on from this sad tale. Also, I hope that Drake knows that, for many fans of hip hop and hip hop culture, he has pretty much burned himself and his reputation with this lawsuit…but then again, I guess he never truly cared about his rap cred in the first place. You lost a rap battle that YOU started and egged on. Once that happened, you broke one of the most important rules in Rap beefs–you didn’t take the ‘L’ and move on. From the moment you brought this lawsuit forth, for a long time listener of Rap and Hip-Hop, going all the way back to the days when the Sugarhill Gang was just getting started, you have lost all of the Rap cred you ever had.
I get it. The music industry is a cutthroat place, and many sharks are swimming in those waters; and there are few as big as UMG. The thing is, until the loss of this beef, Drake, you were swimming with those sharks and felt proud to do so, until you made the mistake of trying to bite the wrong one. UMG promotes Kendrick Lamar as well. You knew this. UMG are all about money…as are most recording and publishing companies in the music industry. Why did you think it would be any different? Why didn’t you think UMG would help promote ALL of their artists–you and Kendrick included?
In conclusion, I just hope that people can FINALLY move on and let his beef die, but I kinda doubt it. I would actually be shocked if Drake didn’t appeal the court’s decision to dismiss. Lastly, to those that side with Drake on the fact that UMG are money-grubbing scumlords–two things can be true at the same time. UMG can be the most money-grubbing, bully scumlords on the planet, and Drake can be a sore loser of a beef that he in fact started and perpetuated.
