There are spoilers ahead, so if you plan to read the manhua “I Have 999 Abilities” and don’t want to be spoiled, you may want to come back later.
I recently finished this manhua, and I gotta say, it left a lot to be desired. From the beginning, the premise and plot of this tale were clear. The main character, Yang Xi, wanted to heal his sister, Fei Fei, wanted to get revenge on the one who hurt her, and become stronger so that he could protect those he loved (and humanity at large) from invaders from other planes of existence. Simple enough.
While reading the story, I was entertained and intrigued at what path the story would take next. In fact, until the very last chapter, I liked this manhua very much. However, the last chapter was like a kick in the gut for me. After the last chapter, I am left with so many questions, and with many plot points being made almost nonsensical and meaningless.
The biggest problem I had with the ending was the death of his sister literally moments before the final fight was over. It made no sense for a few reasons. One, after curing his sister, Fei Fei, of the alien influence from the Dark Blue Alliance (which was a race of creatures much like the Goa’uld of Stargate lore–a parasitic race of beings that took over the bodies of humans as hosts), he achieved one of his minor goals of making his sister a very powerful fighter on par with his own strength, as the strongest fighter of humanity. She was powerful enough to hold off an entire army of the Eastern Alliance of Ossid plane, which was an achievement, because the other planes of existence were at least a hundred years ahead of the Azure Plane in terms of gathering strength to defend their plane from these invaders in the first place. She was on the cusp of becoming a Celestial-ranked fighter, which at the time of this story was the pinnacle of power in the fighting world of the Azure Plane and throughout all planes of existence. She also had an astute mental acuity. She could have figured out a way to release herself from the clutches of Alonso, a Silver-ranked Celestial without sacrificing herself for the cause, just like damn near every other baddie in this story (especially the Dark Blue race contingent) until the end. Yang Xi could have used his Void Gate ability to send his sister to the Void Palace and saved her that way. Fei Fei could have gone to Judgement’s (their guild’s name) Cloud Palace and escaped that way. Instead, what happens–Fei Fei sacrifices herself and self-destructs, an ability that all higher-level fighters have as a last resort. Didn’t make any sense.
Another thing that bothered me about the end was Blast’s sacrifice. Blast, who had been the world’s strongest fighter before the emergence of Yang Xi, sacrificed himself so that Yang Xi could use his energy to finally reach the rank of Silver Celestial and be on par with Alonso, the final big bad. Why did Fei Fei have to die if Blast was just going to sacrifice himself and make Yang Xi strong enough to kill Alonso? When Blast sacrificed himself, it would have left an opening for Fei Fei to escape, because at that point, Yang Xi would have been the bigger threat. Blast’s sacrifice made Fei Fei’s death completely meaningless. Yang Xi already knew the stakes of the fight, and tensions were already very high. He didn’t need the added push of his sister dying. Also, why couldn’t he just use the power/energy that his sister expelled when she died? That would have definitely sent him to Silver rank and then some. It made Blast’s sacrifice unnecessary as well.
Yang Xi was never in danger of dying because he had the ‘Rebirth’ skill. He could have blown himself up with no problems and still made it back. Also, once he became a Silver-ranked Celestial, he was effectively immortal in all planes of existence, because the only other people who possibly could kill him were other Silver-ranked Celestials. Throughout all the planes written about in this story, there were only two Silver-ranked Celestials–Yang Xi and Alonso.
This last chapter (the end of the battle and story) was so abrupt that it also left me, as the reader, with many unanswered questions. For instance, what happened to all the heroes who survived the “last” fight? Did they continue to train and get stronger just in case another plane’s invaders come knocking at their door? Why wasn’t Yang Xi able to revive his sister the way he did Blast and the Sage Stone avatar, which was a portion of Alonso’s soul? Was the fight truly over? What happened to the “humans” who went to the Ossid plane in order for Humanity to survive, even if it was on another plane of existence? What happened with him and his girlfriend, Lin Naixue? Halfway through the story, after Yang Xi started taking trips to the Ossid plane and the Chaos Sea, there was no mention of her ever again. At the very end of the story, Yang Xi is seen walking the streets of the Azure Plane looking like Aiden Pierce from Watchdogs–completely anonymous to the rest of the world, yet being a silent sentinel just in case danger comes knocking again.
None of the last chapter of this manhua served the story as a whole at all, except to end the last fight and nothing else. It was nonsensical and left too many plot holes. For me, this last chapter made what would have been a 9/10 experience reading a manhua into a 7/10 experience–started slow, became amazing and intriguing throughout, yet ultimately died a horrible, unnecessary death in the end…kinda like his sister, Fei Fei, and Blast. This ending really felt like the author gave up at the end and just wanted to end this story as fast as possible, to get on to whatever else they were doing in life.
