E3 2021

Here’s a few notes that I took from the Summer Game Fest yesterday.

  • Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands looked good
  • Lost Ark looked good. Will have to see
  • Chivalry II looks good, and a nice medieval alternative to CoD.
  • Escape from Tarkov looks interesting.
  • I used to love the SimCity games, so Two Point Campus is interesting
  • Vampire the Masquerade: Blood Hunt looks really good…at least it did until I saw that it was a BR (Battle Royale) game. I love the series, so I’m hoping that they actually get VTM: Bloodlines 2 finished.
  • I can’t wait to play D&D: Dark Alliance. Also, I just want to add that I love Ember Moon. She is an amazing wrestler and a fellow nerd.
  • I love the Rooster Teeth anime gen:lock, but I care nothing for Paladins.
  • I really want to play Ratchet and Clank, but I don’t have a PS5, so it sucks…stupid scalpers!
  • I plan to play Far Cry 6 when it comes out.
  • I love the writing of George R.R. Martin, so I was really looking forward to Elden Ring. What’s sad is I don’t like Demon Souls style games, so when I found out that Elden Ring is basically another Demon Souls game, I lost all interest in it.

Update:

Ubisoft Forward:

Where was Splinter Cell?

Where is Beyond Good and Evil 2?

I’m interested in Rocksmith+, because I am a rusty player of a few instruments, and I’ve loved the Rocksmith series in the past. I will say though, as a subscriber to Ubisoft+, I hope that this live service comes with no extra cost for me. I am still waiting for Far Cry 6 to release in October–it looks really interesting. Riders Republic looks really interesting as well. I will say though–I really wish that someone would either remaster SSX Tricky, or make a new sequel to that game. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THAT GAME. It was so much fun without all the fluff of live services, microtransactions and such, and that what games are supposed to be–right? I am having fun playing Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, so I’m glad that there will be more to play. Now, if I could just get past the motion sickness I feel when I play the game.

XBOX/Bethesda:

Where is Fable?

First off, I want to say that I own an XBone and I pay for Game Pass Ultimate, so that I can play games on PC more than the actual console. During this year’s press conference, I honestly became…more disappointed I guess with many of the titles revealed. To be really frank, there were only…four games tops that I cared about, and of those four, two are console exclusives. At this point, I only care about Halo Infinite, because though Halo 5’s ending left such a bad taste in my mouth, I just want to see how the story ends. Redfall looked very interesting, but it’s not releasing this year. They say Summer 2022, but hell we all know how that goes. I just hope that it’s not some BR game. It didn’t look like one, but you never know. The Starfield trailer, for me granted, was a wasted of time. We already knew that the game was going to take place in space. Right now, the tentative date for release is at the end of next year. Other than that, that trailer told me nothing, and honestly Bethesda have no cache with me when it comes to releasing completed games on time. They can thank Fallout 76, and frankly Blizzard Entertainment for that.

Square-Enix:

Where is Final Fantasy XVI?

It seemed that SE’s press conference had the most games that were actually coming out this year. I am a huge fan of Final Fantasy XIV, and I am very much anticipating the Endwalker expansion that comes out later this year. I don’t know if I’ll try Final Fantasy Origins: Stranger of Paradise or not, but it seems interesting. The “Final Fantasy meets Devil May Cry” looks like it would be fun, but I want to see more gameplay first. I really want to play Guardians of the Galaxy. I looks like a lot of fun. I just hope it doesn’t turn into another Marvel’s Avengers situation. I’ve always been interested in the Life is Strange series. The new entry in the series, Life is Strange: True Colors looks really intriguing–I mean I love mysteries, I love games with superpowers, and this is a combination of both. What could go wrong? I’m not gonna talk about Final Fantasy VII Remake: Intergrade. Yuffie is one of my favorite characters from my favorite FF game, Final Fantasy VII, so obviously I want to play it. That said, like many gamers out there, I don’t have a PS5, so I can’t play it. I’m actually really huffed about it.

Nintendo:

  • It’s the 20th Anniversary of Super Monkey Ball.
  • They are working on Metroid Prime 4. They also introduced a new game in the series called Metroid Dread. Looks like a classic side-scroller…classic Metroid. New Amiibo figures…nice.
  • I’ve never understood how Just Dance works on the Switch, but the 2022 rendition of the game is releasing on the Switch.
  • A new Dragonball game comes out in September.
  • I love playing golf and golf games, so I know I’d love the Mario golf game.
  • Shin Megumi Tensei V looks interesting. It comes out in November.
  • Fatal Frame has a new game coming out named Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water. It comes out this year.
  • Doom Eternal…wooo! I’m sorry…I haven’t liked Doom since I played the first Doom back in the day. In general horror survival games–horror anything doesn’t really interest me, unless it is a really compelling story, and it’s more psychological thriller than horror.
  • Tony Hawk is coming to Switch.
  • Strange Brigade is a new game releasing later today on the Switch.
  • A new expansion for Hyrule Warriors comes out on June 18th.
  • A new trailer for the sequel to Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was revealed

I watched the rest of E3, and honestly this year’s E3 was lackluster to say the least. I know a good part of it may be because the pandemic, and that’s understandable, but still…as a gamer, I honestly would have just preferred another Summer Games Fest like last year, with a lot of trailers and actual gameplay videos for games that are actually coming out this year, instead of the many “coming soons”, and the “coming 2022 and 2023” that was announced instead. I really wish developers wouldn’t reveal a trailer until the game is 95% complete and only reveal it when it’s nine months from release. That’s ample time for gamers to prepare for purchase, if we plan to buy a game. It just miss a really good RPG like Ghost of Tsushima or God of War, where there is a full and complete game, free of bugs, that finishes a full thought, so to speak. I’m tired of especially AAA developers adding live services to damn near every game, when it’s not needed. I can understand adding cosmetics to a game, but why not have an ingame way of unlocking them, like in games past. Don’t get me wrong. I can understand having boosts in a non-competitive RPG, but why suck the life and the fun out of the game by having cosmetics purchasable with real money? Just my thoughts as a longtime gamer.
