My experience with a local music store

So before I speak about the issue I had with Mississippi Music, I just want to say that I was seriously thinking about not talking about my experience with them, but I don’t want anyone else to go through what I did.

So, near the beginning of last month, I took my Fender Strat into Mississippi Music to get a tune-up. I wanted them to look at and possibly fix/replace the pots and switches, replace the jack, and reset the floating tremolo on the guitar. At the time, they informed me that because of the fact that they are backlogged on instrument repair and because they didn’t have a lot of luthiers available, it would take six (6) weeks to get repaired. I had no problem with that, so I patiently waited for my guitar to be repaired. Last week, I called to get an update on the repair of my guitar. When I called, at first they couldn’t find my account, then they tried to tell me that there was no guitar repair order on my account, which was wrong. Then I had to give them the serial number on my guitar before they could finally find it, after having to talk to three different people. When they finally found my guitar, they informed me that it hadn’t even been looked at yet, and to give them until the end of this month in order to repair it.

SO, I call them today in order to get an update on my guitar. Again, there was no repair work order on my account, and they seemed to know nothing about it. At the time, they took my phone number and told me that they would call me back shortly. I wait an hour, and then I call back to talk to the manager. He at first tells me the same thing. He doesn’t know anything about a work repair order. Then after searching through his computer, he tells me that my guitar was invoiced out of the store on the 3rd of October, meaning that it was picked up. I found this extremely odd and worrying as I hadn’t gone to pick up my guitar, and I know my hubby hadn’t. So, I tell the manager my thoughts on the situation, and he asks me to hold on while he goes to look for my guitar. Now, they’ve had my guitar for a month and a half. It should have at least been looked at by now because it has reached the six-week mark. He comes back to say that my guitar is there, but that it still hasn’t been looked at, and that it would be another week or two before they would be able to get to my guitar. So, I say to the manager, “SO, I was told at the time that it would take six weeks to get my guitar repaired. It has been six weeks, and my guitar has yet to be looked at let alone repaired?” He then asked me the date that I brought the guitar in to be repaired. I told him, and then he then proceeds to count from that day until today, as if I was lying to him. When he realizes that I was indeed telling him the truth, he reiterates that it will be another week or two before they will get to my guitar…not fix…get to my guitar. So, I then told him that I will just come to pick up my guitar because by this time I didn’t trust that they would actually ever get to my guitar or repair it. The manager informed me that he would have my guitar waiting for me at the front desk.

When I got to the store, not only was my guitar not sitting at the front desk waiting for me but again they didn’t know what I was talking about and they had to go look for my guitar. Before I left the store, I open the case to make sure that the guitar was in the same condition as when I brought it into the store.

Needless to say that this was a horrible experience, and though now I am going to have to find a luthier in order to get my guitar tuned up and repaired, I most definitely will never recommend Mississippi Music for much of anything ever again. What’s sad is my mom purchased my very first guitar from Mississippi Music, when I was 11 years old. The guitar that I’m trying to get repaired was made in the same year as my very first guitar. It has a lot of sentimental value to me. Mississippi Music was a quality establishment back then. What the heck happened?!
